Okay, he was stalling. Even though it was important to acknowledge Chise's work because SHE did better when she felt useful.
"I resisted at first, until I encountered Night Sky under the Knight's control. She wounded me rather badly, and while I do have a regenerative healing factor of my own... My resources were taxed enough by it that I succumbed to the Knight's control."
